How Balance Transfers Can Help You Pay Down Debt Faster

Share:

Making a credit card payment every month and barely seeing your balance change can be frustrating. You’re putting money toward the bill, but interest keeps eating into your progress. A balance transfer may help by moving an existing credit card balance to another card with a lower interest rate. With less money going toward interest, more of your payment can go toward what you owe. For South Dakota households working to get ahead of credit card debt, that can create some welcome breathing room.

Understand How a Balance Transfer Works

A balance transfer moves debt from one credit card to another. Some cards offer a lower promotional annual percentage rate, or APR, for a limited time, giving you an opportunity to pay down the transferred balance at a lower cost. It doesn’t erase the debt, but it can change how much you pay to carry it. If you’re considering a balance transfer credit card in SD, compare the offer with your current card’s rate and think about how much you can realistically pay each month. Approval and the available credit limit will also affect how much you can transfer.

Look Beyond the Promotional Rate

A low rate is appealing, but the other terms matter, too. Check whether there’s a balance transfer fee, how long the promotional rate lasts, and what rate will apply to any remaining balance afterward. For example, a hypothetical 3% transfer fee on a $4,000 balance would add $120 to your cost. You’ll want to weigh that fee against the interest you expect to save. Also check any deadline for completing the transfer and whether the promotional rate applies only to transferred balances. New purchases may have different terms and could accrue interest even while your transferred balance has a low rate.

Give the Savings a Job

A balance transfer works best when you pair it with a repayment plan. Start with the amount you’re transferring, include any transfer fee, and choose a target payoff date. As a simple example, paying off $3,000 over 12 months would require $250 per month before accounting for interest or fees. Your actual payment target may need to be higher. Making only the minimum payment could leave you with a balance when the promotional period ends. If your budget allows, keeping your payment steady as interest costs fall can help you make faster progress.

Keep New Debt From Undoing Your Progress

Credit card debt consolidation can make payments easier to manage, but freeing up room on your old cards can also make it tempting to spend again. Review your budget and decide how you’ll handle upcoming expenses without rebuilding those balances. Continue making required payments on your original cards until you confirm the transfers have posted, and check afterward for any remaining charges or interest. Payment reminders or automatic payments can help you stay on schedule, provided you keep enough money available to cover them.

A balance transfer can be a useful tool when the savings make sense and the payments fit your budget. Want to explore your options? Contact Sentinel Federal Credit Union to discuss current credit card terms and whether a balance transfer could support your debt repayment goals.

“If you’re in the Rapid City area and you’re looking to drop the elbow off the top rope, Macho Man style, then look to Sentinel Federal Credit Union! Their customer service is off the hook and when you call you never get a robot or an automated answering machine! I don’t think I’ll trust another big bank with my money for as long as I live! By the way, I don’t even live in South Dakota!”

“We have several credit unions that got lost in the mix during a move–our bad. However, out of all of those credit unions, SFCU went OUT OF THEIR WAY to ensure we knew our account was dormant and helped us through the process of getting the account back on track. They also refunded every fee taken for dormant status. After losing more money than I’d like to admit from other institutions, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the customer service of Sentinel FCU.”

“I worked with Dane to open a business account. Dane took the time to explain all the documents I’d need in advance. The appointment itself went smoothly, and it was a very quick and easy process. Dane was able to answer all my questions. I am happy with this branch’s customer service. The turnaround time and benefits (no high minimum balance or additional fees) honestly can’t be beat by any other bank. Highly recommend.”
