How to Choose the Right Rewards Credit Card

Share:

Credit card rewards sound simple enough. Use your card, earn points or cash back, and get a little something in return. Once you start comparing cards, though, things can become complicated pretty quickly.

Some cards earn extra rewards on gas or groceries. Others focus on dining, travel, or online purchases. Then there are introductory bonuses, annual fees, rotating categories, redemption rules, and points that may be worth different amounts depending on how you use them.

So, how do you choose the right rewards credit card? Start with your own spending instead of the biggest offer on the page.

Look at Where Your Money Already Goes

Pull up a recent bank or credit card statement and see where you spend the most. You may find that groceries and fuel make up a larger portion of your monthly purchases than you realized. Or perhaps you travel frequently for work and regularly pay for hotels, airfare, and meals.

That information gives you a much better starting point than simply picking the card with the most advertised rewards.

For many South Dakota households, a card that rewards everyday purchases may be more practical than one built around luxury travel. If most of your card spending happens at grocery stores, gas stations, and local businesses, choose a rewards program that recognizes those purchases.

The key is to earn rewards from spending you would be doing anyway. Buying something unnecessary just to earn points usually defeats the purpose.

Decide How Much Simplicity Matters

Some people enjoy tracking bonus categories and figuring out how to get the most value from every point. Others would rather use one card, earn rewards, and not think much about it.

A cash back card is often a good fit for someone who values simplicity. Cash back is easy to understand, and you generally do not have to calculate whether points are worth more when redeemed for travel, merchandise, or something else.

A points-based rewards card may offer more flexibility, but it is worth checking the details. Do points expire? Is there a minimum amount required before you can redeem them? Are certain redemption choices worth more than others?

There is no single right answer. A more involved program can be useful if you will actually take advantage of it. If not, a straightforward credit union rewards card may provide more practical value.

Do Not Let Rewards Distract You From the Rate

Rewards tend to receive most of the attention, but they are only one part of the card. Take time to review the interest rate, annual fee, late fees, foreign transaction fees, and any introductory terms.

If you carry a balance from month to month, the interest you pay can easily outweigh the rewards you earn. In that situation, a card with a competitive rate may save you more than a card offering a slightly higher rewards percentage.

Ideally, you should be able to use the card for planned purchases and pay the statement balance in full each month. That lets you enjoy the rewards without turning everyday purchases into long-term debt.

Choose a Card That Fits Real Life

A good rewards credit card should work quietly in the background. It should reward purchases that already fit your budget, offer benefits you will actually use, and have terms you understand.

“I worked with Dane to open a business account. Dane took the time to explain all the documents I’d need in advance. The appointment itself went smoothly, and it was a very quick and easy process. Dane was able to answer all my questions. I am happy with this branch’s customer service. The turnaround time and benefits (no high minimum balance or additional fees) honestly can’t be beat by any other bank. Highly recommend.”

“If you’re in the Rapid City area and you’re looking to drop the elbow off the top rope, Macho Man style, then look to Sentinel Federal Credit Union! Their customer service is off the hook and when you call you never get a robot or an automated answering machine! I don’t think I’ll trust another big bank with my money for as long as I live! By the way, I don’t even live in South Dakota!”

“We have several credit unions that got lost in the mix during a move–our bad. However, out of all of those credit unions, SFCU went OUT OF THEIR WAY to ensure we knew our account was dormant and helped us through the process of getting the account back on track. They also refunded every fee taken for dormant status. After losing more money than I’d like to admit from other institutions, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the customer service of Sentinel FCU.”
