Stop The Spam
If you’ve ever applied for a mortgage or loan, you may have noticed something strange — your phone suddenly blowing up with calls, emails, and texts from lenders you’ve never heard of. This happens because of something called “trigger leads”.
When a lender pulls your credit for a mortgage application, the credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, and Innovis) can flag that you’re shopping for a loan. They then sell your information to other lenders, who use it as a “trigger” to contact you with offers.
While some people don’t mind shopping around, most of us would rather avoid the flood of unwanted calls. The good news? You have the right to opt out.
How to Opt Out
The official way to stop trigger leads is through the credit bureaus’ consumer choice website:
Here’s what you’ll find there:
- 5-Year Opt Out – You can opt out online for five years.
- Permanent Opt Out – You can choose a permanent option, but it requires filling out and mailing back a signed form.
- Opt In – If you ever change your mind, you can opt back in to receive offers again.
Other Helpful Steps
- Do Not Call Registry – Add your number at www.donotcall.gov to cut down on general telemarketing calls.
- Credit Freeze (optional) – You can place a credit freeze with each bureau to block new credit pulls unless you unfreeze it. This is stronger protection but only makes sense if you’re not actively applying for loans.
Why It Matters
Trigger leads can be frustrating, especially if you’re in the middle of one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Opting out helps you keep control of who has access to your personal information and keeps your phone from ringing off the hook.
If you’re planning on applying for any loan soon, take five minutes to protect yourself. Head to OptOutPrescreen.com and give yourself some peace of mind
