Remember never give out your sensitive information to people who contact you. Sentinel Federal awards $1,000 in Academic Scholarships

We are pleased to announce the recipients of our 2013 Academic Scholarships. Two graduating seniors will each receive a $500 scholarship for their academic excellence toward attending the college of their choice.

The recipients include Katie Morgan Lee, a 2013 graduating Rapid City Central High School senior, Rapid City, S.D., who plans to attend South Dakota State University, Brookings, S.D., and Tiffany Hauf, a 2013 graduating Colome High School senior, Colome, S.D., who also plans to attend South Dakota State University.

Nancy Ellwein, president and CEO of Sentinel Federal Credit Union, states the Credit Union, its members and staff are proud to support and award these Academic Scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college students to help defray the expense of post-high school education. “Our Scholarship Program is funded in part with the proceeds raised from our World’s Finest Chocolate fundraisers. We thank everyone who helped make this investment in our youth possible.”

Payday Loan Collection Scams

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reports that the payday loan collection scams continue to evolve. The IC3 states the scam involves victims being relentlessly contacted at their residences and places of employment regarding claims they are delinquent on a payday loan. The callers refuse to provide information regarding the alleged payday loan and become abusive when questioned. According to IC3, during the perpetration of this crime, the caller demands payment via debit/credit card. These telephone calls are an attempt to obtain payment by instilling fear in the victims. Do not follow the instructions of the caller.

If you are contacted by someone who is trying to collect a debt that you do not owe, you should:

Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger;
Contact your financial institutions and credit card companies;
Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file;
If you have received a legitimate loan and want to verify that you do not have any outstanding obligation, contact the loan company directly;
File a complaint at www.IC3.gov

We are expanding into Box Elder

We recently purchased a building in Box Elder at 22752 Mule Deer Trail which is located along Radar Hill Road near Creekside Estates. We plan on remodeling the 3,162-square-foot building and opening the location as our fifth branch by the end of the year. The new Box Elder branch will offer a full range of financial services, including lending, and will include a 24-hour drive-up ATM and a commercial drop box.

Nancy Ellwein, president and CEO of Sentinel Federal Credit Union, states that expanding into Box Elder will not only benefit our members but the community as well. “The residents of Box Elder currently do not have a full service credit union available within the city limits. We are excited to expand our services into Box Elder to better serve our membership and to offer area residents a more convenient location to access their finances.”

Our membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Pennington, Meade, Lawrence, Custer, Lyman, Todd, Tripp, Gregory and Mellette counties and their immediate family members.
