Sentinel Federal Credit Union was founded in 1955 with a primary goal of serving the military personnel on Ellsworth Air Force Base. Through the years, Sentinel Federal has added other groups to their field of membership along with three other locations. In 1987 a branch office in Rapid City was established to accommodate the growing number of groups that were added to the membership list along with the Ellsworth military personnel who lived in Rapid City.

In 1994 Sentinel Federal purchased Rosebud Federal Credit Union in Winner, SD. Winner is primarily an agricultural community located in the heart of pheasant country about 3½ hours southeast of Rapid City.

 

In 2003 Sentinel Federal expanded their field of membership to persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in and businesses and other legal entities located in the under served area of Lyman, Todd, Tripp, Gregory and Mellette Counties in South Dakota.

In 2004 the Community Charter was approved for Pennington, Lawrence, Meade and Custer Counties in South Dakota.

In 2005 Sentinel Federal Credit Union celebrated 50 years of service.

 

In 2006 the third branch opened at 4011 Triple Crown Drive in Rapid City. The branch relies entirely on a remote teller system to handle member transactions. There are three drive-through teller lanes outside and three remote teller stations located inside the lobby.
